• How do I become a certified drone pilot in Canada?

  Your training path depends on the type of flying you want to do.

  Transport Canada currently divides RPAS pilot certification into Basic Operations, Advanced Operations and Level 1 Complex Operations. Each level builds toward greater operational capability. (Transport Canada)

  At 4DUAV, we have designed our courses so you do not have to purchase the same foundational training more than once.

  Basic Operations is the entry point for pilots conducting lower-risk VLOS operations in uncontrolled airspace and within the limitations established by Transport Canada. (Transport Canada)

  Advanced Operations builds on those fundamentals and prepares pilots for more demanding operating environments and additional privileges. Obtaining the Advanced certificate requires passing the Transport Canada Advanced exam and an in-person Advanced flight review. (Transport Canada)

  Level 1 Complex Operations is the next step for pilots moving toward certain lower-risk BVLOS and complex operations. Transport Canada requires pilots pursuing Level 1 Complex certification to pass both the Advanced and Level 1 Complex exams, complete at least 20 hours of ground school and successfully complete a Level 1 Complex flight review.   A Level 1 Complex pilot certificate also allows the holder to conduct Basic and Advanced operations. Complex operations additionally require the appropriate operator framework, including operation under an RPOC where required. (Transport Canada)

  4DUAV’s progressive training system

  When you purchase our Advanced Ground School, your Basic Ground School training is included.

  When you purchase our Level 1 Complex Ground School, both Basic and Advanced training are included.

  We structure training this way because aviation knowledge is cumulative. Airspace, weather, human factors, regulations, aircraft systems, emergency procedures and operational decision-making become increasingly important as the complexity of the operation increases.

  Rather than teaching you only enough to pass the next exam, our goal is to help you understand how the entire Canadian RPAS system fits together.

  After certification, pilots can continue into specialized training such as EVLOS, BVLOS preparation, SFOC operations, RPOC development, mapping, inspection, thermal imaging, industrial operations, autonomous systems and other professional RPAS applications.

• What is the difference between Basic, Advanced and Level 1 Complex?

  A simple way to think about the three levels is:

  • Basic = foundational and lower-risk operations
  • Advanced = professional capability and broader operating privileges
  • Level 1 Complex = advanced professional operations including certain lower-risk BVLOS capabilities

  There is one important distinction worth making. A Basic certificate is not legally limited to recreational or hobby flying. A pilot can perform paid work under Basic Operations provided the flight remains within the Basic operating rules.

  Transport Canada currently defines Basic Operations as including operations with a drone weighing no more than 25 kg, within visual line of sight, in uncontrolled airspace, more than 30 metres horizontally from people and outside specified distances from certified airports and heliports.   For someone who wants to fly recreationally, perform straightforward rural work or simply build a strong foundation, Basic is often an excellent starting point.

  Advanced Operations

  Advanced certification is usually the better choice for pilots who intend to build a professional RPAS career.

  An Advanced certificate provides greater privileges than Basic, although the aircraft must also meet the applicable safety requirements for the Advanced operation being conducted. (Transport Canada)

  We recommend Advanced training for many commercial pilots, public-safety personnel, inspection teams, photographers, surveyors, construction operators and organizations developing an internal RPAS program.

  Level 1 Complex Operations

  Level 1 Complex represents a significant step forward in Canadian RPAS operations.

  The regulatory changes introduced a certification pathway for certain lower-risk BVLOS operations. Transport Canada requires a minimum of 20 hours of ground school in addition to the Advanced and Level 1 Complex examinations and a Level 1 Complex flight review. (Transport Canada)

  For organizations looking toward BVLOS, larger operational areas, scalable enterprise programs or increasingly sophisticated RPAS missions, Level 1 Complex is becoming an important professional qualification.

• Do I need my own drone for training or a flight review?

  No.

  Whenever possible, we recommend training and completing your flight review with your own aircraft. You become more comfortable with the exact controller, flight modes, menus, emergency procedures, battery system and operating characteristics you will use after certification.

  That familiarity has real operational value.

  However, we understand that many students want to become certified before purchasing a drone, or may own an aircraft that is not appropriate for the flight review they need.

  4DUAV maintains aircraft that can be made available for Basic, Advanced and Level 1 Complex training and flight reviews for an additional fee.

  Contact us before your course or flight review and we can discuss the most appropriate aircraft for your situation.

  We also provide access to specialized training involving larger professional RPAS, heavy-lift platforms and highly automated or autonomous systems when applicable to the training program.

• Does 4DUAV provide flight reviews?

  Yes.

  Transport Canada requires an in-person flight review to obtain an Advanced Operations certificate and a separate Level 1 Complex flight review as part of the Level 1 Complex certification process. (Transport Canada)

• Why should I choose 4DUAV instead of simply studying for the Transport Canada exam?

  Passing an exam and becoming an effective RPAS operator are two different things.

  Transport Canada’s published knowledge requirements establish what candidates are expected to know for Basic, Advanced and Level 1 Complex certification. Transport Canada also notes that these knowledge requirements are not necessarily comprehensive and that operators and training organizations may need to supplement them. (Transport Canada)

• Do you provide help with SFOCs, RPOCs, manuals and regulatory compliance?

  Yes.

  Some of the hardest problems in professional drone operations occur after a pilot becomes certified.

  A client may request an operation outside your normal privileges. Your company may need an SFOC. You may be preparing for Level 1 Complex operations and require an RPOC. Your organization may need an Operations Manual, Maintenance Control Manual, SOPs, training program or safety-risk-management process.

  Transport Canada’s current RPOC framework requires organizations seeking Level 1 Complex operations to establish items including an accountable executive, maintenance responsibility, a training program, SOPs and a process for managing safety risks. (Transport Canada)

• I am completely new to drones. Where should I start?

  Start with the mission, not the certificate.

  Ask yourself what you eventually want to do with drones.

  If your goal is recreational flying or straightforward lower-risk operations, Basic may be enough.

  If your goal is commercial drone work, inspection, mapping, public safety, construction, photography, utilities or building a professional RPAS career, Advanced is usually the more useful training pathway.

  If your goal includes certain BVLOS operations, enterprise-scale RPAS programs or more complex professional operations, you should begin planning toward Level 1 Complex.

  Because 4DUAV’s courses build on one another, you do not have to worry about paying repeatedly for the same foundational training.

  Advanced includes Basic training.

  Level 1 Complex includes Basic and Advanced training.

  That allows you to choose the level that matches where you are going rather than where you happen to be today.

• I already have my Basic or Advanced certificate. Can I continue my training with 4DUAV?

  Absolutely.

  You do not need to have completed your previous certification training through 4DUAV.

  We regularly work with pilots who already hold Transport Canada certificates and want to progress into Advanced, Level 1 Complex, specialized operations, flight-review preparation or professional operational development.
